NAR: Existing Home Sales Dropped 10.3% In December

Yesterday the National Association of Realtors told us existing home sales in the U.S. were down 10.3 percent compared to the same time a year ago. NAR's chief economist, Lawrence Yun, blamed the rise in mortgage rates. "The housing market is obviously very sensitive to mortgage rates. Softer sales in December reflected consumer search processes and contract signing activity in previous months when mortgage rates were higher than today. Denton County home sales continued their slide in December as the Dallas-Fort Worth real estate market saw a 5th consecutive month of year-over-year declining sales activity. Denton County experienced an 11 percent decline in closed home sales along with a corresponding 11 percent decline in pending home sales activity. Denton County existing home sales declined 11 percent in the month of October. Sales of existing single-family homes were a bit softer still. Existing Home Sales Lowest In 3 Years With 4.1% September Drop

The National Association of Realtors reported the lowest levels for existing U.S. home sales in 3 years. Sales of existing homes posted at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5,115,000 for September, down from August numbers which were also revised lower. The year-over-year decline in existing home sales of 4.1 percent puts sales levels back to where they were three years ago. Today the National Association of Realtors reported that existing home sales for August came in flat from last month, actually down about 1.5% from this time last year.
